The Southerly
The Masters of Invention

The Masters of Invention is a culinary experiment like no other with a new ingredient like nothing else on Earth, played out over three issues of New Zealand's leading foodie magazine - Cuisine.
Twenty of the best chefs and mixologists create entirely original recipes and culinary creations with only one stipulation. The Southerly must be at the heart of every concoction.
James, our client, had an interesting experience in a high end bar in Tokyo. He gave their head mixologist a taste of his new honey blended with single malt whisky to see what they thought. They immediately got busy trying it with this, mixing it with that to see how this new and unique ingredient could create new cocktails.
Back in NZ, our brief was to do a print ad for The Southerly in Cuisine magazine. After hearing about the Tokyo mixologist, we thought there could be a more interesting way to connect with their audience.
We also though Cuisine magazine would be hungry for content and that chefs and mixologists would be as inspired to create as their Japanese counterpart and also hungry to have their creativity on display in NZ's leading culinary publication. We talked to them about documenting the creation of new and unique dishes and cocktails and The Masters of Invention was born.
